How to Carve a Viking Pig-Dog A Bearly Boaring Task

Master Nigellus leHaie
In CE 2024, a Viking toy was discovered in an archeological dig in Iceland. It was carved out of a soft volcanic stone called teff. The archeological community is presently arguing as to what this critter actually is. Is it a pig, dog or a bear? I have no idea. It is definitely not a duck; possibly a pig- dog. I have recreated this toy in soft wood as wood is easier on my carving knives. I use 3/4 inch pine lumber which I usually use scraps from my shop. Basswood would also be a good choice. To carve your own, simply take the provided blank and remove anything that doesn’t look like the critter you think it is . It can be left rough or finish it with a scraper. Most Viking toys that have been discovered were quite rough and unfinished. Most are worn out with hard play with numerous bite marks. Toys like this were usually left unfinished, but could be sealed with a food safe finish. If a toddler gets ahold of it, it will go straight in the mouth.
