A&S Information

The WMU Special Collections and Rare Book Department will be bringing some of their newer acquisitions!

Class Descriptions are posted as additional information becomes available, so please check back often!

Additional activities in the A&S Hall:

  • Embroidery Salon: Embroidery Salon will be in the morning Co-hosted by Lady THL Valya Abnikova doch’ the kingdom A&S champion
  • Book Binding Salon: The Midrealm Book Binding Community will be holding a book binding salon in the afternoon during Val Day Hosted by THL Arianwen o Wyndham.
  • Populace Vote: The populace will vote, bean count style on the A&S displays on display in in the hall from 10am to 4pm. Please have a brief description of your project with your item. Projects need to be picked up at 4pm for turn over for court.
  • Baroness’ Choice: The Baronesses of Andelcrag will be honoring one A&S Entry with a Baroness’ Choice award.
  • Her Majesty’s Choice: Her Majesty will be honoring one entry with Her Majesty’s Choice.

Introduction to Islamic Bookbinding – THL Melike bint Nikola

Embark on a fascinating journey into the exquisite art of Islamic bookbinding. Participants will delve into the fundamentals of bookbinding terminology, gain insight into the significance of written language in Islamic cultures, and delve into the intricacies of crafting a 15th-century Islamic-style book.

Service Speed Networking- Bantiarna Ceara inhean Mhuirgheasa

Class type: Hands on

Cost:none

Fighters have tournaments, A&S has Faires, I introduce to you: Service Speed Networking. You’ll be given a specific amount of time (Determined by the number of people in attendance) to sit and discuss with different peers before switching to the next peer (Adjustments may be made for the number of attendees based on peer-to-non-peer ratio.) It will be a good time to ask questions, get feedback, spread your renown, introduce yourself and what you do in the SCA, and network with others who might be able to assist you or connect you to others to support your ideas.

Learn to Make Double-core Endbands- Baroness Roana Aldinoch, OP

Class type: Hands on for ages 10+ for up to 10

Cost: $1 for handouts and kits

Description: Endbands are the earrings of any mid- to late-medieval book. The book simply isn’t dressed up without that little bit of sass on the ends! Learn a simple endband construction that will look good on every book. Plus, look through other designs and how they change through the centuries.

Description:Confused by what the Kingdom A&S options are? Not sure where you should go or what you’re looking for? Come learn about three different A&S opportunities in the Midrealm, ask questions, and figure out where you’ll be most comfortable.

Pretty & Practical Faced Necklines- Lady Katherine Coscombe

Class type:Lecture

Cost:none

Description: Learn how to use a facing to create a durable finish for your tunic or gown necklines. Decorative, contrast facings are great from Norse to Normans, while hidden facings provide a sturdy option for all periods.  Limit of 12 handouts, but QR code to PDF will be provided.

10-15th century Islamic Pattern darning -THL Ghadah Falak Noor 

Class type: Hands on

Cost:$5 class fee (includes handout, supplies for in class practice. A small pattern darning diamond will be completed in class.  

There will also be kits available for an additional $10  which include: linen, 6” hoop, snips, embroidery floss, needle and beeswax. Enough materials to complete up to an 6”x8” unlined pouch. These kits do not include the class notes. 

Description:  Learn about, and how to do Islamic pattern darning embroidery.

Cheese Making for Beginners-Baroness Sadb ingen Neill

Class type: Lecture

Cost: I will have 10 kits that people can purchase for $5 if desired ($6 with optional culture) that include all the less common equipment they need to start their own cheese journey.

Description:There is a perception that cheese making is difficult and requires a lot of equipment. I’m on a quest to inspire the people of the Midrealm to become Cheese makers! Come join me and discuss ways that you can get into basic medieval cheese making with inexpensive ingredients and common kitchen equipment. This class will provide information about cheese in the SCA period, encouragement to become a curd nerd and a chance to try some of the cheeses that you can make at home. In addition to FREE SNACKS

Sultanate of Woman- Muruvvet mutfagin bint Mehmed bey Galata’nin

Description: A brief discussion of the women behind the sultan during the 16th and 17th centuries.

Incense in SCA Period- Mistress Ilaria degli Attavante 

Class type: Lecture with some hands on weather permitting

Cost: $2 hand out fee

Description: Incense played a significant role in spiritual and medicinal practices throughout the SCA time period.  This class is an overview of basic materials necessary to use and enjoy medieval and Renaissance incense.  Weather permitting, participants will have an opportunity to smell incense (resins and blends) outside.

Indigenous Food pre-columbian through present day- Ulfarna Kjellen

Class type: Hands on and lecture

Cost: No cost- RSVP is required

Description: Did you know that 60% or more of the food you eat every day is indigenous to North America? The foods we consume on a daily basis are rooted in North America.  Pre-columbian diets were varied across the continent. This class will focus on some key ingredients and the importance they played throughout history. At the end, we will examine  current-day iterations of the same ingredients. This class will take a look at indigenous food sovereignty versus processed indigenous ingredients.

Appreciation vs. Appropriation- Ulfarna Kjellen

Format: Lecture

Cost: No cost

Description: This is a partner class for Indigenous Food pre-columbian through present day.

Indigenous representation in the SCA and how appropriation and other negative influences have far-reaching effects.

Description: A brief survey of weaving and its literature for the individual who’s most likely question is what is that thing called.

Marriage Contracts: Not Bills of Sale-Baroness Aliyah bat Asriel

Class type: Discussion

Cost: None

Description:This class is presented in a discussion format with presentation of some marriage contract content and intent. Learn about the oldest extant exemplar and the dispersion pattern of the  illuminated ketubah (marriage contract).

Waterbearing 101- Red Bronwyn

Description:In this class we will discuss proper sanitation standards for waterbearing, easy prep for sports drinks and snacks, and how to spot dangerous medical conditions like heat illnesses and TBIs.

Kumihimo Cording Basics – 8 Strands- Noble Edward the Stranger (they/them)

Format: Make and take

Cost: $3

Description: Make-and-take class where you will learn to make a basic, two-color, eight-strand kumihimo cord. The loom you receive in your kit is yours to keep.

Intro to Carving Chains and Knotwork in Relief-Ulfun Barefooted

Format: Demo and discussion

Cost:

Description: I’ll take you through a step by step process of relief carving interlaced and overlapped designs like chains and knotwork, and discuss the basic tools need and which woods you might want to work with.

Using an Ames Lettering Guide-Matildis la Libraire, OL 

Format: Hands on

Description: Students will learn how to use the guide to create lines for a scroll text block, as well as a diapering grid for miniatures. Students fill in the text block on a 9×12 scroll blank.

Class limit 10 students; a few lettering guides may available for purchase ($5)

Intro to Color Theory-Matildis la Libraire, OL 

Format: Make and take

Cost:

Description: Based on concepts taught in the book Blue and Yellow Don’t Make Green by Michael Wilcox. Matildis discusses the value of a “double primary” palette in mixing colors with control and precision. Students will make and take a complex color wheel with the provided paint kits. 

Class limit 6 students; this is the first time this class has been taught, and it might have “bugs” to work out!

How to Pronounce Old English- Lady Maedhbh Ní Manainn

Format: Interactive learning

Description: Interested in reciting Beowulf at a bardic event, but not totally sure how all those diphthongs work? Want to learn how people spoke long ago? Come learn how to pronounce Old English! No experience with the language is necessary, and handouts will be included.

The Everyday Tudor–Clothing and Fabrics For Anyone Not Sitting on a Cushion- Lady Laurensa Silverlock

Format: lecture

Cost:

Description: I will be talking about what the middle and working class people of 16th century England wore, how many clothes they actually owned, as well as how, if at all, they were affected by sumptuary laws, and a little bit about the Guilds of London at the time. Finally, a little bit about how to build a Tudor capsule wardrobe.
